When towing trucks and commercial vehicles, two central technical and safety-related aspects must be considered in addition to the actual lifting of the disabled vehicle.
Disconnection of the Drivetrain During Towing
If a truck is lifted on the non-driven axle – usually the front or steering axle of the tractor unit – the drivetrain between the drive axle and the gearbox must be properly disconnected.
The reason for this is the lack of gearbox lubrication during towing operations. Without this measure, severe transmission damage can occur within a short time. Removing the driveshaft or implementing an equivalent technical solution is therefore mandatory.
Active Braking of All Rolling Axles
A particularly safety-critical aspect of heavy-duty towing is the full braking effect on all axles remaining on the roadway.
This means:
- The towed truck must be fully integrated into the braking system of the tow truck.
- Trailers or semi-trailers are supplied with compressed air by the tow truck and are actively braked.
- The disabled tractor unit itself must also be controlled and evenly braked via all rolling wheels and axles.
